Culvert and Storm Drain Cleaning in Southern New Mexico
A culvert that will not drain is a problem twice: once when it backs up, and again when the water finds somewhere else to go. Sediment, gravel, roots and trash build up over time, and in this part of the state a single monsoon storm can pack a line solid in an afternoon.
We clear culverts, storm drains, catch basins and inlets with high-pressure jetting and vacuum recovery. The jetter cuts the blockage loose and scours the pipe wall; the vacuum truck pulls the debris out instead of pushing it downstream into the next structure. We clean pipe up to 36 inches in diameter and up to 500 feet in length, and we can put a camera down the line to show you exactly what is in there.

What builds up in a line here
Southern New Mexico has its own version of this problem. Long dry stretches let sand and gravel settle in the invert, then a monsoon cell drops an inch of rain in twenty minutes and moves all of it at once. What we usually find:
- Sand, gravel and sediment. The most common blockage by far, and the one that gets worse quietly.
- Roots. Mesquite and salt cedar find joints and cracks and do not let go.
- Trash and vegetation. Tumbleweed, brush and debris packed against a grate or headwall.
- Grease and buildup. On process lines and food-service laterals.
- Collapsed or crushed pipe. Jetting will not fix this. What it will do is tell you that is what you are dealing with, and where.
How we clean a culvert or storm drain
- Look at it first. We check both ends, the grade, the headwalls and what is actually accessible before anything gets unrolled. Access is usually the constraint, not the pipe.
- Jet the line. High-pressure water breaks the blockage loose and scours the pipe wall. We work the nozzle back through the line rather than punching a hole through the middle of a plug and calling it clear.
- Vacuum the debris out. This is the part that matters. Sediment and debris come out into the truck instead of washing into the next structure downstream, which is how a cleared culvert becomes somebody else's blocked culvert.
- Camera the line if you want it verified. A pipe camera shows the condition of the pipe after cleaning and pinpoints cracks, offsets, root intrusion or a collapse. Useful when you need to prove the line is clear or decide whether it needs repair.
- Confirm flow and clean up the site. We verify the line runs and leave the area clean.
Camera inspection
Jetting clears the line. A camera tells you what shape it is in. We can run a pipe camera before cleaning to find out what we are dealing with, after cleaning to verify the line is actually clear, or both.
If the pipe is cracked, offset, root-invaded or collapsed, that is where you find out, before you budget a repair instead of another cleaning.

Why jetting and vacuum instead of digging
Digging up a culvert to fix a drainage problem is expensive, slow, and usually unnecessary. Jetting and vacuum recovery clears the line without opening the road, the shoulder or the parking lot.
When the pipe genuinely is broken, crushed or collapsed, we can tell you that and where it is, and hydro excavation lets us expose that spot without a blade near the pipe.
